Sofia Coppola returns with a new film called The Beguiled, a bloodied revenge drama based on the 1996 novel of thesame name. The stellar cast includes Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, Colin Farrell and and long-time collaborator Kirsten Dunst. The film, set in a women's boarding school in 1864 in Virginia during American Civil War, will be released in the United States on June 23rd.
"The main crux of the story is about the dynamics between a group of women all stuck together, and then also the power shifts between men and women," told the Lost inTranslation, Marie Antoinette and The Virgin Suicides film director. The harmony between Nicole Kidman that plays the headmistress of Miss Martha Farnsworth Seminary for Young Ladies, Kirsten Dunst (teacher Edwina) and Elle Fanning (student Alicia) is suddenly disrupted by the arrival of a wounded Union army soldier, played by Colin Farrell. "I haven’t really done a genre film, it was fun to figure out how to approach that but still [keep thefilm] in my style, and to have this kind of beautiful, dreamy world that I like— but with a plot!".
The Beguiled soundtrack has been composed by the French rock band Phoenix. Not really a big surprise considering Coppola is married to frontman Thomas Mars and the band has previously contributed music to various other films such as Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette.
Phoenix will also release their newalbum Ti Amo on June 9.
